When?: Various dates from Early December through to Christmas (25th December) Where?: Traflagar Square, London Website: There is no official website for this as it is a series of Christmas themed events held in the square over the weeks before the holiday. Check local press and websites for further information on events nearer the time. As gratitude for Britain’s support during World War II, the people of Norway have given the people of London a large Norwegian Spruce Christmas tree. The tree is situated in Trafalgar Square each year and once in place and decorated a ceremony takes place with local dignitaries present, carol singing led by the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields and readings. This now customary event for many Londoners signifies the start of the countdown to Christmas and the start of a series of events held in Trafalgar square over the weeks leading up to Christmas. Events are publicised in the local press shortly before they are performed and any visitor wishing to partake of the unique atmosphere of Christmas in Trafalgar Square is advised to check the local paper and listings to see what is on. Carol singing is perhaps the most popular with many choirs providing a harmonious backdrop to the myriad of Christmas shoppers as well as raising money for many worthwhile charitable foundations.
