Described by Timeout Magazine as “Less po-faced than the Oxbridge race and much more colourful”, the Great River Race has come a long way since the first race was organised in 1988. Nowadays the race attracts a huge number of participants from all over the globe who decorate themselves and their boats in a mind-boggling number of colourful and inventive ways and in the process raise a great deal of money for a whole host of charities. The cannon to start the race will sound at 11am and the race is expected to last until around 5.20pm when the first team is expected to cross the winning line and be proclaimed as the prestigious UK Traditional Boat Champions! There are plenty of vantage points along the river to watch the race and the dazzling array of craft, some designed to win, others to entertain and amuse. A great day out for all the family and one of the main highlights of the September entertainments calendar in London.
