The Greenwich and Docklands International Festival is as stated by The Sunday Times “Ambitious and free”. Each year the festival has a different theme and for 2009 that theme is water which seems entirely appropriate given that the area around Greenwich and Docklands has been shaped entirely by the whimsies of the River Thames. Highlights of the 2009 festival include an outdoor son et lumiere of Handel’s Water Music and French poets Fous de Bassin showcasing their show for the first time in the United Kingdom, a show in which the performers will seemingly walk on water. The sheer scale of the events in the Greenwich and Docklands International Festival, combined with the fact they are entirely free, attracts large crowds and with more outstanding events to be announced over the course of the year, it is easy to see why this festival remains one of the most popular and best attended in London.
