Yoga for Children in London |
Posted on September 20, 2009
Yoga can mean so many things to many different people but for children yoga must mean fun, and only then can it be blended with those important Yogic poses and principles. Children's Yoga helps kids develop balance, self-esteem, and calmness. The fundamentals of yoga stay the same for children's yoga and other types, but it brings it's new slant, created especially for kids and their particluar needs.
Children's yoga typically consists of common yoga poses woven together through a fantasy story. So Dog, Tiger and Butterfly poses become characters to be acted out, allowing a story to unfold.
There are many benefits of yoga for children but the most important are the following:
Breath Awareness In Yoga class children are taught a special way to breath. It's called Ujjayi Breath (which means Victorious Breath). Ujjayi breath increases energy and heat in the body. This heated breath detoxes the body and stills the mind.
Self-esteem and Partnership Children learn to work with others, cultivating values such as sharing, partnership and trust. They also learn ways to combat a restless mind and techniques for helping them concentrate.
Focus of the Eyes. Called Drishti, focusing the eyes creates mental focus in the class/practice and reduces mental "chatter". The gaze is specific to each pose and children learn where to look from their teacher.
But why wait until your child is old enough to do yoga on their own, growing in popularity are the new mother and baby yoga classes that will introduce yogi to you child right from the start.

Yoga Nidra for Children The benefits of Yoga Nidra are numerous but the practice is mostly known for quickly relaxing the body and mind. Children tend to be able to relax more quickly that adults and so Yoga Nidra tends to be more constructive with them. Louisa Yoga (www.louisayoga.co.uk) offers Yoga Nidra classes for kids.
