About Trafalgar Square Trafalgar Square was laid out between 1829 and 1841 to commemorate Lord Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. It was built by the same John Nash who designed St James's Park, Regents Street and Regents Park, and also by Charles Barry.
From the 14th to the late 17th century, much of the area occupied by Trafalgar Square was the courtyard of the Great Mews stabling, which served Whitehall Palace.
