For three hundred years Covent garden was home to London’s fruit and veg market from the time in 1656 when the then Duke of Bedford was granted a royal charter for a market which was to sell flowers, herbs, vegetables and fruit. The market thrived and so did the trade of the prostitutes who flowed to the area. Magistrate John Fielding is quoted as saying in 1722 ‘One would imagine that all the prostitutes in the kingdom have picked upon the rendezvous’.
